Prevent Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)


Hypertension or High Blood Pressure is a common lifestyle disease of the modern world. It is especially prevalent in the urban areas where people live high paced life with poor dietary habits and very less physical activities.


A blood pressure level of 140/90 mmHg or higher is called hypertension or high blood pressure. A majority of people over age 65 have high blood pressure. If your blood pressure is between 120/80 mmHg and 139/89 mmHg, then you have prehypertension. This means that you don’t have high blood pressure now, But you  are likely to develop it in the future unless you adopt the healthy lifestyle changes.

If you have prehypertension you should change your food and lifestyle to normalize your blood pressure. In case of hypertension, you should seek treatment from your doctor.

Below factors lead to hypertension

  • High intake of salt

  • Eating packaged and refined food

  • No physical activity or exercise

  • Being overweight

  • Consumption of Alcohol and Smoking

  • Mental Stress

  • Diabetes

  • Deficiency of Vitamin D3

  • Misuse of medicines


Managing hypertension

  • Eat these items

    • More of non-starchy vegetables, especially dark leafy greens; yams/sweet
      potatoes are okay in moderation.

    • Legumes; beans, peas, and lentils of all kinds.

    • Instead of wheat or rice consume more of quinoa, millet, buckwheat, and other seeds.

    • Low sugar fruits like apple, orange, cherries, strawberry are good

    • Have hemp seeds daily



  • Maintain a healthy weight

  • Exercising regularly

  • Avoid tobacco and alcohol

  • Minimize processed salt intake and increase potassium intake

  • Get enough vitamin D3 through sunlight and/or supplements

  • Avoid stress and worrying

  • Seek help to resolve emotional issues
