Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava)

Guru Rinpoche ( also known as Padmasambhava) is an Indian Buddhist Guru who appeared in 8th Century. Many believe that he was Lord Ram in his previous incarnation. Padmasambhava was born as an eight-year-old child appearing in a lotus blossom floating in the Swat Valley area of modern-day Pakistan.  He is regarded as the founder of the Nyingma (literally means ancient) tradition. The Nyingma tradition is the oldest of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Padmasambhava taught Tantra to Tibetans. But he was forced to leave due to the suspicions of the Tibetan court. However the court invited him back to subdue the demonic hostile forces who were preventing the spread of Buddhism. The demons were not annihilated, but were obliged to submit to the dharma. This was in accordance with the tantric principle of not eliminating negative forces but redirecting them toward spiritual awakening. Padmasambhava supervised the translation of many Tantra texts.  Bhutan ( a small country near North East India) has many important pilgrimage places associated with Padmasambhava. The most famous is Paro Taktsang. The Vajra Guru (Padmasambhava) mantra Om Ah Hum Vajra Guru Padma Siddhi Hum is favoured and held in esteem by sadhakas. Many of those who gathered around Padmasambhava became advanced tantric practitioners . They greatly helped to found and propagate the Nyingma tradition. The most prominent of these include Padmasambhava's five main female consorts, also known as dakinis and his twenty five main disciples. Guru Rinpoche and his closest disciple Yeshรฉ Tsogyal travelled all over Tibet and the Himalayas, and blessed and consecrated the entire land.
