FOMO (Fear of Missing Out )

You have just bought an expensive mobile phone and very happy about it. You show it to your friends and wait for the praises. One of the friends mentions that you paid a very high price as a similar mobile is available for half the price and he shows you his own phone. You immediately become anxious and start wondering how come you were not as smart as your friend to buy the right mobile ? It is quite okay and normal to think like this. But what if this becomes a constant habit in every small matter ? You always fear that someone else is doing something better than you and you are missing out the "better thing". If so, you are suffering from FOMO ( Fear of Missing Out).

FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is  a constant fear that others might be having rewarding experiences while you are missing out the same. It creates an anxiety within you.  You always have the desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing. FOMO is also defined as a fear of regret leading to compulsive concern that one might miss an opportunity for social interaction, a novel experience, a profitable investment, or other satisfying events. FOMO perpetuates the fear of having made the wrong decision and missing out a better option. It is the fear of not being included. FOMO may drive someone to constantly look for a better or more interesting connection with others, abandoning current connections to do so, without realizing that what they move to is not necessarily better, just different.

FOMO  results from the new and increasing addiction to social media. Individuals are now able to view and have constant access to what their friends and peers are doing. FOMO is almost a direct result of social media addiction. The constant use of smartphones ultimately leads to people constantly viewing sites all day long.  People who grapple with FOMO might not know exactly what they are missing but can still hold a fear that others are having a much better time. People sometimes say yes to everything due to the fear of missing out even though they are not interested in the same. Isolation from society develops due to unhealthy digital habits, such as constantly checking for emails and social media updates. This leads to insufficient engagement in present social interactions. People get overwhelmed by the amount of information that allows them to stay up-to-date and it is almost impossible to not miss out on something. This increases people's dissatisfaction with their experiences and a feeling of having less. FOMO negatively impacts overall psychological well-being of people . It triggers negative social and emotional experiences, such as boredom and loneliness, through social media usage. Texting while driving is a direct effect of FOMO as people do not want to miss out conveying of information or gaining the same even at the cost of their safety.

STOP getting sucked into a  life dictated by society and always feeling short of satisfaction. Look inwards. Thoughtfully understand and decide what you really want from life. Desires are endless and there are countless people whom you want to defeat due to your FOMO. Is it really worth it ? Think. Take recourse to yoga, meditation and spirituality. This will make your mind calmer and clearer. It will help you see things objectively instead of pursuing life like a rat race. Remember that the richest person is the one who has minimum requirements. You are unique and hence your life and experiences are unique too. Tap your inner happiness and bank on your soul's guidance. You will never ever face FOMO !
