Mahavtar Babaji - The Deathless Saint

The holy land of India is the cradle of spirituality for the entire world. The mighty Himalaya mountains in North West part of India are blessed by the presence of many holy saints since ages. To this day, the sacred Himalayas are most sought after by spiritual aspirants from all over the world. What makes these Himalayan mountains so alluring to seekers of Truth ? There are many reasons for the same. However, one of them is the presence of a deathless saint who still dwells in his hidden form with his band of mystical disciples in the interiors of Himalayas. His name is Mahavatar Babaji. The title 'Mahavtar" means the Great Avtar ( Descent of God in human form on earth ). The name Babaji means revered holy master. Nobody knows his real name. The name 'Babaji' has been lovingly bestowed upon him by his devotees.

Babaji has never revealed himself publicly ever. Nobody knows when he was born. In fact, nobody knew about his existence till it was revealed the first time by a realized Master, Paramhansa Yogananda in his book "Autobiography of a Yogi". In this book, many references are made to Mahavatar Babaji. Paramhansa Yogananda's guru was Sri Yukteshwar and Lahiri Mahasaya was the guru of Sri Yukteshwar. The first reported encounter of Lahiri Mahasaya with Mahavatar Babaji was in 1861 in Ranikhet, a small town in the Himalayas.  One day while walking in the hills of Dunagiri above Ranikhet, Lahiri Mahasaya heard a voice calling his name. Following the voice up the mountain, he met a tall, divinely radiant sadhu ( Hindu holy man).He was amazed to find that the sadhu knew his name. This sadhu was Mahavatar Babaji. Mahavatar Babaji told Lahirī  Mahasaya that he was his guru from the past, then initiated him into Kriya Yoga and instructed Lahiri Mahasaya to initiate others. Lahiri wanted to remain with Mahavatar Babaji. But he told him instead that he must return to the world to teach Kriya Yoga and that "Kriya Yoga sadhana would spread through the people of the world through his (Lahiri Mahasaya's) presence in the world."

Lahiri Mahasaya reported that Mahavatar Babaji did not give his name or background, so Lahiri gave him the title "Mahavatar Babaji." Lahiri Mahasaya had many meetings with Mahavatar Babaji, recounted in several books, including Paramhansa Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi.

Paramahansa Yogananda, in his Autobiography, described Mahavatar Babaji's role on earth :

The Mahavatar is in constant communion with Christ; together they send out vibrations of redemption, and have planned the spiritual technique of salvation for this age. The work of these two fully-illumined masters–one with the body, and one without it–is to inspire the nations to forsake suicidal wars, race hatreds, religious sectarianism, and the boomerang-evils of materialism. Babaji is well aware of the trend of modern times, especially of the influence and complexities of Western civilization, and realizes the necessity of spreading the self-liberations of yoga equally in the West and in the East.

According to Yogananda's autobiography, he has a sister called Mataji (meaning "Holy Mother") who also has lived throughout the centuries.  Her level of spiritual attainment is comparable to her brother's, and she lives in a state of spiritual ecstasy in a cave. Yogananda frequently prayed out loud to "Babaji-Krishna."

Those who sincerely are seeking Babaji, call him out with love and devotion from their hearts. He will certainly respond to the sincere devotee. Lahiri Mahasaya has categorically mentioned about Babaji " Whoever utters with reverence the name of Mahavtar Babaji, he attracts an instant spiritual blessing". Earnest seekers of spirituality should pray to Mahavtar Babaji for his blessings and guidance. He will certainly send you some kind of help. Glory to Mahavtar Babaji ! Salutations to Mother India !
